Mini Beasts
Do you hear that buzzing sound in the woods? What just flew by your ear? The woods are alive with mini beasts! Insects are making their last preparation for winter and are everywhere! This makes it a perfect time for Forest Day classes to explore insects!
This week found us chatting about what makes an insect and how all insects have six main body parts. The primary children even enjoyed Dr. Jean’s Insect Song! We took our knowledge outside and looked for insects that we could paint. Using watercolor, students took a few minutes to enjoy their surroundings and paint an insect of their choosing. Some of the groups practiced 3 minutes of silence while painting, taking in the bird calls, the buzz of crickets, the creaking sounds of the trees. Some classes made their way to the outdoor classroom, nestled in the woods beside the school, others explored the school yard and painted in the grass. Our youngest learners became artist on the blacktop creating insects, as big as them, out of sidewalk chalk!
Hurt No Living Thing
Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830 -1894)
Hurt no living thing:
Ladybird, nor butterfly,
Nor moth with dusty wing,
Nor cricket chirping cheerily,
Nor grasshopper so light of leap,
Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat,
Nor harmless worms that creep.
